Collections Management

Projects at The Spurlock Museum

A sample of custom housing I created for the reorganization of organic storage to optimize space, ease of access, and support for fragile objects

Cleaning, condition reporting, and rehousing over 300 Victorian paper ephemera (half of the collection is pictured at bottom right)- Valentines, Christmas cards, birthday cards, and business cards, many with 3-dimensional elements.

We transferred the collection from confusing, jumbled flat storage to a new, numerically-filed system.

Some required custom book-like housing to protect delicate embossing, layers, and edges.

Other skills gained at the Spurlock Museum:

  • trained in object handling

  • gallery maintenance

  • IPM tasks & disaster preparedness research

  • FileMaker Pro database

  • reshaping clothing artifacts

  • rolling textiles to optimize storage space

  • materials identification for Endangered Species Act compliance (ex: walrus vs. vegetable ivory, IDing giraffe hair)

  • cleaning a variety of organic and inorganic materials including metal, leather, plant fibers, textiles, fur, and ceramics
